Golf Day 2024
LOOOORRRDDDD!
A beautiful day in the sunshine at Hersham GC for the
Strollers' golf day, perfect conditions for a parade - and a parade it was, as
James Dela Rue strolled to the title with a handicap-busting 47 points (which,
for the uninitiated, means he was 11 shots better than his official handicap of
28, which will now no doubt be the subject of a downward revision).
Thirteen players showed up to enjoy the bacon rolls,
welcoming golf course and ham, eggs and chips lunch.
We should, in fact, be grateful that the Lord tired after
his front nine - on which he shot 39, five over par, for 27 points (I will
gloss over the fact that his marker had him down as 30 points on the front, as
the three points makes no difference to the overall result).
It was, by any estimation, a stunning round and as playing
partner Rob Wainwright (who scored a very respectable 35 for equal fourth place
- in other years, a winning score) said, a pleasure to watch.
Not, perhaps, so pleasurable for Pete Wood, who off 25 had
a fantastic round for 41 points, or Maurice Brett, who had 40 off a handicap of
24: both scores would have easily won in previous years.
However, Wood was awarded nearest the pin (DLR was in that,
too, but in normal egalitarian Strollers fashion was only eligible for one
prize) and Brett took longest drive by virtue of being the only person to
actually hit the relevant fairway.
The field was propped up, alas, by Simon West, a stalwart
of the day, with 20pts.
A vote of thanks to Tom Wood for his excellent
organisation, as ever. The more the merrier, so please consider joining us next
year...
